Too expensive, as far as I'm concerned. But and it's a big but I write PHP. EW is okay with PHP, not great. I need great. I need the tool helping me to write syntax-correct code the first time; there's just no reason in the world for me to accept error trips because I missed a semicolon or closing parenthesis.
The tool regularly gets rave reviews, is aggressively developed, and within my little network of developers is highly regarded. It will be a big jump for me for two reasons. First, no DWTs. I'll have to use or develop some other templating mechanism - I need something. I'm going to have to buy the tool and start experimenting.
PHPStorm fits my budget perfectly. JetBrains is a Czech company; while I would prefer to buy American, I also prefer to make sensible, practical decisions. Both these tools are about the same price as PHPStorm. Their advantage is that they work within the Microsoft environment, which I generally like. I can't ignore them, though. I may have to buy one of them just to be able to do a full comparison, a cheap investment if it helps me make the right decision.
If EW development had continued at Microsoft, I would probably use it forever. Sadly, it's time to move on. Indeed, the differences between the programs FrontPage and Expression Web are so significant that your best approach is to recreate your FrontPage web site from scratch in Expression Web.
The reality is that the way we create websites today using HTML5, CSS 3 and Fluid Grid layouts is so different from the way sites were created when FrontPage was developed, that Microsoft really did have to start at square one. As a result, people with sites in FrontPage have to essentially start over when they make the change from FrontPage to Expression Web.
Unfortunately, Expression Web has not become as popular as Microsoft might have hoped, and there has just not been enough demand for Expression Web training to warrant my creating more videos on that program.
If you have versions 1, 2, or 3 of Expression Web, my training videos should serve you well. Adobe GoLive was a popular program among graphic designers and Adobe fans, but when Adobe acquired Dreamweaver, they stopped promoting and upgrading GoLive.
Today, Adobe encourages customers to make the switch to Dreamweaver and the company has completely phased out development of GoLive. We review products independently , but we may earn affiliate commissions from buying links on this page.
Terms of use. With all its strengths, Dreamweaver sometimes seems sprawling and muscle-bound, and it works well only when you give it more screen space than you have on a laptop. Expression Web feels at home on both a desktop monitor and a cramped laptop. I also like the fact that Expression Web costs less than half the price of Dreamweaver. Expression Web 4 is one of three components in a package called Expression Studio 4 Web Professional , which also includes Expression Encoder also available as a free download , a limited tool for encoding AVI and QuickTime video into Windows Media format, and Expression Design, a vector-graphics program that can import Photoshop assets.
This review covers Expression Web 4 only. Features I sometimes think Expression Web is Microsoft's best-kept secret. Its feature set is smaller than Dreamweaver's, but everything is easy to find and intuitively easy to use. The main editing screen, as in Dreamweaver, can display a code view or editable WYSIWYG view of your page, or it can split to show both views side by side.
For the realization of the standard dynamic sites PHP is used mainly as other other Web technologies seamlessly integrates excellent with Adobe Dreamweaver CS6.
For my personal opinion should not be seen the cost of the software, but the quality! Was speaking strictly about Website development, not apps. And was talking of quality alone.
So, my inquiry dealt with developing Websites, and the effectiveness of Microsoft's Expression Web package. Since I was told some very good things about it from unknown 3rd party sources. Would appreciate your views. Marc flag Report. I might not have been clear. The business apps that I was speaking of are web apps not Windows apps.
They are company internal web sites - intranet vs internet. Stu Henning Contract Developer flag Report. Hi David, I'm not a professional web developer and this is an old topic, but I'll throw in my 2?. Komodo Edit doesn't come out of the box with VCS integration, but macros are easy to create. It also has a project list, so you don't need to just open files, but create projects containing a single site or whatever code package in a project.
Sometimes I just shoot up Vim in a terminal emulator and make that little typo go away, but with bigger development it's Komodo Edit all the way.
I suggest you check it out and maybe if you're serious about web development, then check out it's big brother Komodo IDE, which i can't really recommend more as it's an unknown entity to me except by it being based on Komodo Edit and I know it has for example version control systems integrated out of the box.
HTH, regards Marko V. I don't understand why to use Eclipse or NetBeans.
